This past weekend was Thanksgiving, a time for celebrating family and friends and giving thanks for all the blessings in our lives. We spent the day surrounded by friends and family, and missing other friends and family who are far away, sharing in cooking and eating and laughing and talking while little ones played noisily underfoot. This thanksgiving was an extra special one for us since That Man We Call Dad who has been away since mid-august made it home for a visit.
But the thanks we shared that day pale in comparison to the thanks I feel in my heart tonight for all the hardworking men and women who made today’s rescue of the Chilean miners happen.
The kids and I watched some of the coverage tonight, and saw people being rescued, saw people crying even as they smiled, and the most perfect movie-worthy kiss between a husband and a wife — a kiss that, to my mind, compares to that famous photo of the sailor and his girl in the 40’s.
Thanksgiving may have been a few days ago, but for me, today was truly a day for giving thanks.
